What did we have before we could read or write?
Pictures! Afterall, letters are just images that we have encoded so we recognise their sounds and formulate the words. The difference? A picture can say a thousand words! The problem with reading, is that it can seem slow. On average, most people can read between 200 to 250 words per minute.
When people asked the billionaire, Bill Gates, what superpower he wanted to have..
He said: FASTER READING!
Influential people claim that they’ve lost so much time, even years, while reading slowly!
So, what exactly is speed reading?
Any reading where you’re reading above average can be considered speed reading. It’s usually paced at around 400-500 words per minute. Which might sound crazy right now! But it’s definitely not impossible.
Some people even claim to be able to read beyond 500 words per minute by overcoming the rate limiting step of subvocalisation.
Although reading more can’t improve reading speed. But, practicing speed reading stretches our normal reading speed.
To provide context as to where speed reading can lead. We tested two students, one had just enrolled on the course, whereas the second had completed and practiced what he had learned. After giving them three minutes to read, we asked them to mark where they were when the timer set off. Our older student, who had been trained at speed reading with us, was able to read double that of the new recruit. This too is without losing comprehension.
We, at BrainJitsu, love speed reading! Everyone reads daily whether it is emails, news, social media, for work, how much more could you do if you could double your reading speeds?
